yesterday as it turns out, just outside salt lake city. and according to school officials, other students told police that this sixth grader actually pointed the weapon at them during recess and made threats. one father says the school should have gone on lockdown. >> 3:00 o'clock, school gets out at 3:45. there was no lockdown, no one was called, nothing was done. then we had to hear from our kids. >> shepard: the school spokesman says school staff found an unloaded gun and ammunition in the child's backpack. the boy is in juvenile detention. he also faces what they're calling a lengthy suspension from school. >>> in other news, the white house says president obama would actively support a bill to renew the assault weapons ban that expired eight years ago. some republicans claim that ban didn't work the first time and only punishes law abiding gun owners. senator diane feinstein says she'll introduce an updated version of the ban when the new congress gets to work next month. the national rifle association late today released its first statement since the massacre. james rosen live in wa

, good night. breaking news out of san jo. right now the san jose city is on lockdown >>> good evening, i'm elizabeth cook. >> i'm ken bastida. we have breaking news out of san jose. the san jose city college campus is on lockdown after unconfirmed reports of a gunman on campus. these are pictures from chopper 5 over the school now. campus police say the school has been locked down since 4:30 this afternoon. someone had record a person with a gun on -- reported a person with a gun on campus. people were ordered to close and lock doors and stay in. campus police say they are doing a room-by-room search of san jose city college but they have not confirmed that there ever is or was a gunman. they wouldn't confir it. earlier a professor said there are classes in the library with hundreds of people. we are keeping an eye on this. roads are shut down at bascomb and moorpark avenues around san jose city college and that's the situation right now. and we are keeping an eye on it and we'll report if we have any updates for you. >>> the tragedy in newtown, connecticut is spurring a national push

for students at san jose city college less than 24 hours after a lockdown. s.w.a.t. teams swarmed the campus yesterday after a caller reported seeing a gunman. heavily armed police officers searched the campus room by room during the three-hour lockdown. the 911 call came in yesterday afternoon. the caller reported seeing a male possibly armed with a gun at the tech center building. students and faculty were slowly released from classrooms as officers searched the entire five-story building. for many on campus of course it was a disturbing ordeal. >> we definitely barricaded down, sat there hushed our voices got away from the windows made sure we weren't near where anybody can look in. and we were worried. we were afraid. >> well, when all was said and done police were unable to find any indication that a gunman was on campus. but officers did say that they did a thorough search for the sake of caution. >>> more people are coming forward talking about previous interactions with connecticut gunman adam lanza. workers at a newtown hair salon with lanza and his mother were regular customers say

succeeded in pushing the army out of a lot of cities however that just means the army goes in with their artillery, their air force and destroys with whatever they can. the rebels for their part still badly outgunned are doing better, they are becoming more organized. they're getting weapons from qatar and other gulf countries to keep the pressure up on president assad. actions speak a whole lot louder than words here in the middle east. and one of syria's only allies, russia, has stood behind them at least in the diplomatic speak but we just learned russia is sending warships to off the syrian coast there in the mediterranean sea potentially to evacuate russian civilians if things continue to deteriorate inside syria. which does tell you, jenna, people inside syria and also inside the russian government are making at least contingency plans for the demise of the assad regime. jenna. jenna: we'll continue to watch it. level land, thank you. jon: one of hollywood's biggest stars expected to testify today on capitol hill. so what do you think brings ben affleck to washington?
